It might seem obvious that people are all motivated by different things as we all weight the importance of these potential motivational factors differently.

I have tried to list below some of the more common factors and why they may motivate

• Having influence over the way employee complete their work

o Individual: This allows the employee to get some satisfaction that their views are considered valid

o Team: As above but also allows reassurance and confidence that the choices that the team are taking are the best available ones

• Receiving a financial or other type of reward / benefit

o Individual: The primary reason for most people going to work is to be able to maintain an enjoyable lifestyle and/or to support others like their family. This relates to the wages, pension and other benefits that the employee contractually receives.

o Situational: Upcoming deadlines can be met with an incentive encouraging additional work or greater enthusiasm doing work – perhaps something as simple as free pizza if the week’s goals are met

• Recognition of good work

o Individual: A motivational table collated from a nationwide study indicated that appreciation of the work they have done was what individuals prized most highly in their job

o Team: When working as a team obtaining and reciprocating genuine thanks and appreciation on work contributed to a shared task from their peers can aid in the social cohesion of the team

o Situational: A meaningful ‘Thank you’ on completion of a task, possibly every task, helps to encourage similar behaviours in future

• Enjoyment

o Individual: People who are happy with what they are doing are going to want to carry on doing it. From the point of view of the leader manager it is much easier for them to motivate employees who want to do the work they are being paid to do and they may well do extra work they may not receive a direct reward for.

o Team: Happiness, and, conversely, depression can be somewhat contagious. Happy team members will hopefully infect the whole team with their attitude

• Learning new skills / Being challenged

o Individual: I find that learning new skills or being challenged in new ways can be motivating. I enjoy learning new things. Other employees may also see this as a step towards a job or promotion that they are aiming for. Some find being assigned a task that they can be allowed to fail at and work their way out of can be highly satisfying as well

o Team: Changing / rotating responsibilities in a team allows others to feel they can be seen as useful and as a bonus to the employer, to provide cover more easily when necessary

• Achieving goals / seeing progress or business impact of work

o Individual: Encourages them to keep going with work that might otherwise seem unending

o Team: Setting minor goals throughout a project that is being worked on gives a regular sense of accomplishment

o Situational: Seeing the effects of the work that has been done impacting the rest of the business and knowing that they are in some way responsible can be motivational as it makes employees feel like their effort hasn’t been wasted.

• Flexible working hours

o Individual: Means that they don’t need to worry about their life responsibilities interfering with their works ones allowing them to focus their attention/efforts towards the task they are doing. Also shows a level of trust towards the employee.

o Team: Members can feel reassured that work will still be getting done even if they have to organise their working time differently. Can be an incentive to those who do get the benefit of working to their preference to get them to work that bit harder so they don’t lose the freedom of that benefit

o Situational: Offering flexible working to employees who struggle, for whatever reason, to adhere to the standard can provide a solution to what might otherwise be a reasonably serious problem

• Relationships with colleagues

o Individual: Being entrusted with a task by either another member of staff can provide a feeling of comfort knowing that they have earned their place and are respected

o Team: Members of a team that enjoy working together will want to do well so that the opportunity to work together again will be more likely to present itself

o Situational: Impressing others with the quality of their work could lead to possibilities of advancement at a later date or being assigned more interesting and fulfilling work
