In the beginning of Inside Out and Back Again poem 1975:Year of the cat Thanhha Lai reveals that H? is a rebellious child. In this statement Thanhha Lai uses the phrase ,last night I pouted when Mother insisted one of my brothers must rise first this mourning to bless our house because only male feet bring good luck.to show how mad H? is.But in the poem it also says,I decided to wake up before dawn and tap my big toe to the tile floor first showing that H? is stubborn and rebellious. The writer reveals this because she wants to show what type of person she is.However, the author reveals later on that H?s personality changes from rebellious to kind and sympathetic in Last Respects. In the poem Last Respects Lai uses the phrase,Alone at the back of the ship I open Mother’s white handkerchief.Inside lies my mouse-bitten doll, her arms wrapped around the limp fuzzy body of his chick.I tie it all up in a bundle.Brother Kh?i nods back I smile, but I regret not having my doll as soon as the white bundle sinks into the sea.”to convey H?’s character change. The authors words show that H? is beginning to change .She is maturing but still has a long way to go.As a result H?s experience as a refugee causes her to grow as a person.Although H? and her family find a new place to call home, starting over in a new country that is nothing like where your originally from is anything but fun.

Around the end of Inside Out and Back Again poem An Engineer,a Chef,a Vet,and Not a Lawyer Lai is closing the story and revels how much H? has grown as a person.Thanhha Lai states,She turns to me.You love to argue, right? No I don’t.She Brightens.I vow to become much more agreeable.revealing that H? is no longer the girl who spent her time thinking about papayas or the girl who would always disagre. In a span of about a year,H? is a mature girl and no longer stubborn. The year that Inside Out and Back Again takes place in is a big one for H?. She turns ten right as the book opens, but while double-digits are always a landmark moment, her growing-up process is about to be fast-tracked by the Vietnam War. Once her family decides to flee Saigon, H? is forced to leave everything she’s ever known behind, in favor of building a new life in the United States, a place she’s never been before. It’s a doozy of a transition, and forces H? to mature a lot over a relatively short period of time.

The theme of Thanhha Lais novel Inside Out and Back Again is childhood does not last forever. This means everyone has to mature in some way at some point. In literature, a coming-of-age story is a story that focuses on the growth of a protagonist from youth to adulthood .But is not an adult at the end of the story ,she barely turned eleven.
