Censorship as a Challenge to Our Freedom of Speech

Freedom of speech is a right granted to every individual living in the United States of America and it should not be violated by anyone under any circumstances. Students, as well as the rest of our society, have the right to express their beliefs and fight for what they believe is right. Although freedom of speech can lead to chaotic situations within campuses, censorship disregards the first amendment of our constitution and contributes to the belief that remaining silent is the best we can do in order for us to live in a perfect society.

Universities all across the country should acknowledge freedom of speech in all students disregarding their ideas, which may lead to unwanted disorder. I understand that some people put in practice this right to manifest certain ideals that do not contribute anything good to our society, in the other hand, it comes to harm the social order.

Nevertheless, as stated in our constitution citizens are free to state anything they want and absolutely no one can take that away from them.

I strongly support the practice of the first amendment of the constitution inside campus and even when a person’s ideals do not coincide with those of my own I still believe that we should allow them to express without restraint. Although I am against censorship by the mere fact that it contradicts the principles of our constitution, I am also aware that universities conduct restriction with the aim of maintaining order in campus. When the freedom of speech is unrestricted people may articulate certain things that could seem inappropriate or offensive to a person or group of people.

As a consequence, the people addressed in the speech may take action against the speaker which can result in violence or another types of problems that school authorities could fail to control. Despite the glitches freedom of speech could cause in universities, I believe that the practice of this right could result in well prepared citizens. Universities are known as places where individuals prepare themselves professionally to face the world; however, when they are not given the opportunity to state their ideals they are not completely ready to confront the adversity.

Censorship teaches students that keeping their opinions for themselves is what good people do; they will develop the wrong idea that everything they have to share to the world is not important if students do not believe in their own ideas they could fail to succeed in life. Freedom of speech will develop a sense of confidence among the alumni which would prepare them efficiently to face any difficulty they may find during their lives School officials should create codes that grant students the opportunity to debate about an issue so that they could express their opinions and know what they believe in something; it could help them reach a decision beneficial for everyone involved. Freedom of speech can result in many teething troubles thus proving that it should be restricted but not completely denied to students
