Build a Wall to Keep the Race

Topics: Berlin Wall

Last week I did a debate on a topic I did not agree with. This time I thought I’ll do one about the side I agree with. The topic is why we shouldn’t build Trump’s wall. There’s a lot of debate about whether it’s a good idea or not. But I will debate why it is not. Trump wants to build a wall to keep immigrants out. But immigrants are already here, they already settled down.

. He also says that they are taking our jobs, but there isn’t much evidence that that statement is true. And also the wall is a huge waste of U.S resources.

One of the misconceptions about immigrants is that they come into our country, use our resources, and take our jobs. Trump wants to build a wall to stop immigrants from coming into the U.S illegally. But what he doesn’t realize is that there are already millions of immigrants in the U.

S, and most of these immigrants work. Their work is very important to our economy. When these immigrants get here all they want is to make a living, no matter what it is, they’ll take any job that comes their way. Some studies show that the importance of the immigrant population will grow and keep growing. For example, in 2014 unauthorized immigrants made up 24 percent of maids and cleaners, and this occupation is expected to need 112,000 more workers by 2024. In construction, the number of additional laborers needed is estimated to be 150,000.

And while only 4 percent of personal care and home health aides are undocumented, the U.S will soon require more than 800,000 people to fill the jobs necessary to take care of retiring baby boomers. Yes, immigrants do work and they do take jobs but they’re jobs no one would want. In Alabama, there was a law that drove out illegal immigrants.

Most of these Mexican immigrants worked in poultry. When this law took effect, the immigrant workers were gone. The poultry had to find new workers fast. They held a job fair, but few residents were hired. After a while, some quit or were let go. They couldn’t handle the job. Who would want to stand for long hours in a cold, wet room, cutting up chickens? Dairy farms in New York rely on workers from Mexico and Guatemala, many of those workers are believed to be undocumented. In a research conducted by the Cornell Farmworker Program, 30 New York dairy farmers told them they turned to undocumented workers because they couldn’t find and keep reliable U.S citizens to do the jobs. That’s in part because farm work can be physically demanding, dirty, and socially denigrated work. It’s also a very dangerous job. The U.S fruit, vegetable, and meat industries are going to face similar risks if more than half of the workers are immigrants and are not allowed to work. So immigrants do take jobs, but like I said before they’re jobs no one would usually take or want.

Another misconception of immigrants is that they don’t pay their taxes or they are ruining our economy. Immigrants who are authorized to work pay their taxes just like U.S citizens. Undocumented immigrants also pay their taxes. Undocumented immigrants file for tax returns and they pay taxes for benefits they don’t use. Recent IRS data from 2015 shows that the agency received 4.4 million dollars in income tax returns from workers who don’t have social security numbers. According to the Small Business Administration, immigrants are 30 percent more likely to start a business in the U.S than non-immigrants. Also, 18 percent of all small business owners in the U.S are immigrants. These new businesses create new jobs for everyone. And that’s what the people want, more jobs. These statistics seem low, but really how many people are going out of their busy schedules to create their businesses.

Trump wants to build the wall, and make Mexico pay for it. That doesn’t seem right. Trump wants the wall, not Mexico. Also, there hasn’t been much planning on where the wall will be built, since there is so much natural land across the border. Also, what would happen to the fences that are already up? Also if it’s the border, who owns the land that the wall will be built on. If Trump is at all concerned with how the people will react he should look at examples from the past. Like the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall separated families and some people were cut off from their jobs. The Berlin Wall failed because it was demolished 28 years after it was built. So what would happen to Trump’s wall if it was built. Like the Berlin Wall, some people were for it and some people were against it. In the end, it all came crumbling down.

There are other ways to deal with the borders, like better border control. But to build a wall just to keep one race out is just too much.
