Book Report on The Giver

Topics: The Giver

My book report is on The Giver by Lois Lowry. The Giver is a science fiction book The setting some time in the future in a very organized but different than normal town. It is not mentioned what time period this book takes place in.

The first major character is Jonas. He is 11-13 throughout the story. He is also very intelligent, organized reasonable and understanding. He is very close to The Giver in the book. He is also reasonably close to his mother and father, Asher, and Fiona.

The other major character is The Giver. He is an older man who is probably 50 or 60 years old. The Giver is very wise, logical, and friendly. The Giver is closely related to Jonas and not really close to anyone else.

The first minor character is Asher who is Jonas’ best friend. He has a pretty big influence on what Jonas does in the beginning of the story. The next minor character is Lily who is Jonas’ selected sister.

Jonas’ mother and father are also selected and they have a big influence on Jonas. The other minor character is Fiona. Other than Asher she is Jonas’ best friend. Gabriel also becomes important later in the story.

Jonas lives in a very organized different town in the future. He is around 11 years old at the beginning of the story. When the story starts, he is coming up on becoming a twelve which is when you get your assignment and start your training. Your assignment is your permanent job.

Jonas has to wait through the whole first day of the ceremony before he gets his assignment. When they get to Jonas, they randomly skip him. This is very unusual and everyone is very stunned. Then, at the end of the ceremony, the announcer says that Jonas was skipped for a reason. She then calls Jonas up and tells everyone how he will be the new collector of memories. This job is very honorable and also very painful. He then gets his job instructions.

After school the next day, Jonas follows his instructions and goes to meet The Giver. On that day, Jonas receives his first memory and it is very joyful. As Jonas continues to receive memories, over time, he experiences pain, emotions and everything that nowadays we know are very real. The rest of the town does not have most of the memories that Jonas is now experiencing. After a lot of conversation , The Giver and Jonas decide that their town needs to know about the remembrances of their history. They make a plan to get all of the memories to the community even though they aren’t supposed to know any of them.

Then, a year after Jonas gets his assignment, on the day of the ceremony, Jonas begins the plan. He leaves very early in the morning with Gabriel who would have been released, (killed). He also took a lot of food and his dads bike that has the baby seat on it. Running away would save Gabriel and give away all of the memories to the whole city. When he is running away, he travels by night and sleeps in the day to avoid being spotted by the airplanes that search for him for a few weeks. After awhile, Jonas runs out of food and they begin to get weak. Finally, he begins to feel that he is getting very close to his destination. He barely gets to the top of the hill and finds a sled and sleds down the hill. He experiences his first memory for real one time and it is very joyful. He then goes in the house and is in a warm loving family. That is the end of the story.

In my opinion, this book was very interesting. I thought the type of town they lived in was different but cool. The way the author explained it, the book was very easy to visualize. I didn’t like the ending because I thought the book wasn’t completely finished. They could have explained more about the ending. I would recommend this book to anyone because of how you get to imagine how the future world could be. I would also recommend this because of how it keeps you guessing and the great explanation.
