An automated highway system is a automobile based system that can drive a automobile mechanically. This is done using electronic sensors, camera and radar that act as the vehicles’ eyes, determining the lane position and speed and locations of the other automobile. Actuators on the throttle, break and steering gives the command that the driver if human was there would have given.AHS vehicle also have sensors and tools to communicate to other AHS automobile. The concept of automated automobile had arrived before the first computer was built.

GENERAL MOTORS displayed a working model of an automated highway at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York city. Automated trains have been in use since in the 1960’s.but it has not been until recently that the technology has become available To build automated highways and vehicle.

To reduce traffic congestion and traffic delays along with reduction in the no. of acccidents.the need for automated highways system has arrived.The traffic delays has reduced the productivity, increasing frequency and severity of accidents and risk to public health.

Congestion can be reduced by making new highways, new lanes, a mass transit system or new communication sytem so that need for travelling is reduced.

The goal is reduce the risk of accidents and improve the vehicles movement without development new road infrastructure.Building an AHS requires designing automated automobiles and highways to achieve the ideal efficiency and safety.AHS is based on different sensing devices and communication system with other devices and roadways.
