In any organization, leaders are role models for their employees. According to an article by Aditya Mishra, ‘an organization without a leader is like an army without its general’ (Mishra 5). An effective corporate leader should show excellent leadership skills to drive his/her organization to grow. There are many successful corporate leaders in today’s business, including Elon Musk. Elon has demonstrated his visionary leadership through his entrepreneurial appetite, good business acumen, and excellent implementation skills.
Elon’s passion for entrepreneurial ventures is limitless.
Musk was born in South Africa, and he migrated to North America, where he attended the University of Pennsylvania (Marcu and Balteanu 176). In 1995, he moved to Silicon Valley after graduating from college (Muegge and Reid 20). Furthermore, when Elon was 21, he founded his first company Zip2, which created an online guide for New York City and Chicago. Later in 1995, he sold the company, and he made a profit of 22 million dollars (Muegge and Reid 20). After Zip2, Musk developed X.
com which would morph into PayPal, which he later sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002 (Muegge and Reid 20). Moreover, in 2002, Musk founded the SpaceX Company, which revolutionized the space technology industry (Muegge and Reid 20). In 2003, Musk acquired Tesla Motors, which has grown into a luxury electric car manufacturer (Marcu and Balteanu 20). Similarly, others of Musk’s entrepreneurial ventures are SolarCity, Hyperloop, OpenAI, Neuralink, and The Boring Company (Muegge and Reid 21). Musk’s entrepreneurial appetite has made him one of the world’s great innovators (Belfiore 102).
Moreover, Musk’s possession of good business acumen allows him to drive his business ventures to success.
For example, with the development of SpaceX, Musk wanted to inspire people to think about exploring space again by making it cheaper (Marcu and Balteanu 20). According to Musk, ‘creating the technology needed to establish life on Mars is and always has been the fundamental goal of SpaceX’ (Muegge and Reid 22). Musk’s visionary leadership has allowed him to think about a bigger picture of the future. Also, Musk believes that man’s fate in the universe is his obligation (Muegge and Reid 23). Therefore, he invested his fortune in the creation of SpaceX.
Furthermore, another characteristic that describes Elon as a visionary leader is his excellent implementation skills. For example, during the development of SpaceX, Musk used open-concept offices, where scientists and engineers worked alongside welders and machinists (Muegge and Reid 23). Also, he would hire young overachievers fresh from college and top engineers from Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Orbital Sciences (Muegge and Reid 23). In 2010, SpaceX became the first company to send a privately owned and operated vehicle into orbit and back (Belfiore 103). Furthermore, with SpaceX, Musk is demonstrating that will be possible to make humans into multi-planetary species (Muegge and Reid 24).
In conclusion, effective corporate leaders have driven their companies to success. Elon Musk has demonstrated great entrepreneurial appetites by founding and leading many successful companies. Also, Musk’s business acumen allows him to implement his visions for SpaceX. Moreover, Musk’s excellent implementation skills are making the impossible a reality. Lastly, Musk’s visionary leadership is revolutionizing an entire industry and the future of humankind.
