Dance Video Reviews

For the first dance I viewed, “Baryshnikov dances Sinatra,” I thoroughly enjoyed the drama and skill with which both dancers (but especially the female) performed this dance. Their movements were very expressive, which is what I personally enjoy seeing in a theatrical dance performance, It allows me to feel more in touch with the emotions of the dancers, and better understand what they are trying to convey through the dance And it was obvious that the movements, although they seemed very fluid, would be extremely difficult to perfect.

A lot of the movements seem as though they would require complete trust in one‘s partner, as the woman was oftentimes being thrown around and her whole weight was being held only by her male counterpart. This being said, I disliked the fact that this particular dance seemed almost violent in nature, especially towards the woman.

She was being thrown about in such a way that made it seem as though she had no control over her own body, and that Baryshnikov was making the movements for hers I enjoy partner performances more when the skills of both dancers are highlighted and made obvious, but for this dance in particular it seemed as though he was overshadowing her movements and controlling her in a way that could have been conveyed just as effectively through less violent means.

The second dance I watched, “Stomp-Brooms” is actually a very personal one for me I went to a Stomp show with my family when l was very young, and it is one of my fondest memories of attending a dance performance, I really enjoy the practiced rhythm in their movements, and how all of their steps have to be exactly right in order to keep on beat and achieve the proper sound.

This kind of precision is also something I appreciate, and the rhythm to their movements is both exciting and soothing for me One thing that I disliked about this video in particular is how although the steps have to be very practiced, the dancers are so focused on keeping the beat and utilizing their props that movement of the body can come second to maintaining the rhythm. Some of the body work seems almost sloppy, because the movement of the brooms is so heavily rehearsed, Overall this is my favorite of the videos, and I thoroughly enjoy Stomp performance as a whole. The last video I viewed, “Pilobolus Molly’s Not Dead” was probably my least favorite out of the three. I was able to sincerely appreciate the skill with which they were performing the moves, as most of them were extremely acrobatic and would have required a lot of skill and practice, I always enjoy it when performers seem sincerely invested in what they are doing, and this is a prime example of how effort and practice go a long way toward an enjoyable performance.

The thing that really made it difficult for me to enjoy this performance was the music the dance was set to. Something about that style of music was really irritating to me, and I did not feel that it matched very well with the dance that was being performed. 1 probably would have really enjoyed this dance if it had been set to a different track that was less grating for me to listen to For me, half of any dance performance is the music the performers are dancing to, It provides the backdrop for the entire performance, creates the atmosphere and allows me to better understand what the dance means or how I should be feeling while watching the dancer But in this case, all the music did was impair me from really enjoying the skill and movement of the dancers.
