A Point of View on Educational Philosophy

Throughout our world’s history, there have been many different types of philosophies that have been used In the field of education. In general, everyone tends to have their own philosophy or basic idea of how they believe that things should be or how things should run. An educational philosophy not only deals with basic ideas or beliefs on teaching and learning but it goes beyond that. It touches upon things such as what it means to teach, and how to know when the information is being retained.

It talks about what it means to learn. and to really learn in the classroom. An educational philosophy initially starts with the students and your perception of them as a whole. In a classroom, I believe that the learning should be centered around the students in a way that helps them better understand the information. As a teacher, you need to be able to learn about your students and learn what methods will help them learn.

The information you teach is all the same; the only thing different is the way that you present it. As a teacher you should also motivate the students to learn. Without a goal to reach it is hard for students to strive to become greater than they were to begin with.

When it comes to learning in this way it is obvious that every teacher in the United States or around the world would not be able to teach in the same way because they should be teaching to meet the needs of the students.

In my opinion, that is okay. As long as all the information and basic curriculum are the same. it should not matter which way you decide to share the information with your students. A key part of an education in our world today involves getting to know the students and pushing them to want to learn and better themselves: if the students are not on your side than there is no way you will be able to teach them successfully. When teaching inside a classroom it is also important to recognize what it means to teach and how to know when the information you are teaching is being retained or not. By definition, teaching is the occupation, profession, or work of a teacher.

For me, this definition does not do a teacherjustice. When it comes to teaching it is so much more than that. Teaching is dedicating all of your time to help further a child’s education. Teaching is learning what your students need from you, and basing your lesson plans off of what would be best for them. Teaching is taking the time out of your day to talk to your students one-on—one and to see how they are doing and how their lives are. Teaching is not about laying all the information out on a whiteboard and having students copy it down without explanation; it is about going beyond the basics and stepping outside of your comfort zone for your students, It is about telling stories and coming up with new methods to use inside the classroom. Another big part of teaching is being able to know when the information is being learned by your students, or whether you need to go into further detail for them to be able to understand it. In my highschool, we set up a rating system. Every time we did an activity, we had to rate ourselves a one to four on how we felt on the information that we were just taught. When we did this, we all thought it was stupid but it gave the teacher a head count on who was getting it and who needed more help.

It allowed the teacher to be able to be more successful because she knew where we were at as a class. Things like this are helpful in a classroom because teaching is pointless if the students are not actually learning anything. Another part of an educational philosophy is learning itself and what it truly means to learn. It is hard to put an exact definition on it because it seems like something that can’t be defined. For me, learning is not rust about being able to memorize formulas, words. or specific things for a quiz or exam. It is not about crunch studying just so that you will get an A. To learn in a classroom setting, you need to actual care about what you are learning about; you need to forget about grades and care more about retaining the actual information Learning is about gaining knowledge and understanding more than you currently do. Learning is something we do and we do not even realize it. Ever since we were little we grew up learning little things and eventually it all adds up. You don’t think about it but every little thing you do in life is a different form of learning whether it is through strict instruction or through life lessons.

Throughout your life there are so many possible things you can learn in your education journey. So who determines what knowledge will and will not be taught? The curriculum nowadays is so thought out and is held to a certain guideline that it is rare for a teacher to branch out and teach you something that is not in the curriculum. This is also because the teachers are given so much more information to teach than they have time for. But why is it okay for a few people to sit down and decide what to teach and everyone just listens to them? In a way I feel like this causes us to hold ourselves back. Yes it is impossible to teach all the information and history we have today but we are depriving children of knowledge by holding teachers to such strict standards It is a little messed up that a certain set of people determine what knowledge is taught and what will be discarded. When it comes to relating to an actual educational philosophy, I would be most likely to support the realism philosophy. By definition, Realism is an approach to life that means dealing with the way things are. If you see the world through the lens of realism. you accept what’s in front of you and don‘t pretend it’s othen/vise.

I personally believe that there should be some structure to an education; you should have a guided curriculum to ensure that all student everywhere are required to learn the same information. But. I also believe that an education should be practical and based off of facts and based off of real things in life that are proven. I do not believe that education should have anything to do with religion because they are two separate issues and I also do not believe that it should be based off of inferences or things that are not real. In the world, there are many different types of educational philosophies. Everyone has there own opinion and has their own beliefs about teaching and about learning. How you chose to define teaching, learning, and knowledge is up to you but each of these things link back together In the end. An educational philosophy has several different aspects to it and ultimately shows you what kind of teacher you want to be and what you would expect to see in a perfect classroom. Although everyone has their own thoughts on what an educational philosphy should consist of, they all have a common goal and that is to teach the students and increase their knowledge overall.
