This book gives a lesson on servant leadership. The definition and rule of servant leadership is in order to lead you must serve. The idea behind effective leadership is based on the understanding of responsibility, the respect and care of those who lead and follow. Today there is a lot of management and administration who will just tell you what to do, when to do it and expect the job to be done pronto. They have no respect, knowledge, or even care for their workers.

For these leaders a job is simply a paycheck. They are there simply to get paid and to keep their position, just do their job well enough to keep it. For servant leaders, their leadership is about character and pride in their productivity.

Service leadership is getting things done through people whom mean something to their company or goal. This type of leadership is built on relationship, love, service, and sacrifice. I currently work at FedEx Ground, where every leader has been in the exact same spot as you.

The establishment hires within and every manager has been through basically any situation you will go through and will know how to handle it. This structure is what has made the company so successful. In the time being at this job, I have seen first-hand how the managers lead their employees. First of all they do not just sit on their behinds and monitor what everyone is doing from the side. They actually do the same work the employees do plus the extra duties they must fulfill.

After reading this book, I can actually see that there are indeed managers such as ours’ who serve to lead. When asked by a manager to perform a specific duty, it is not rude, demanding or hostile, especially when they would, could, and have done the exact same thing. These managers treat everyone with the respect that each person deserves. They are very committed to their jobs and their employees, and they lead by example and influence their employees to want to without forcing it upon them.

Some managers show up, bitching and moaning about how bad their jobs are and how awful the administration and CEO’S/presidents are and have no idea that it influences their employees in a bad way, where they start to think they’re working for a bad company. Reading this book has taught me that without love for their job and others, service, and sacrifice someone cannot be an effective servant leader. A servant leader understands and meets the needs of his people before on his wants. The attributes someone can use in order to become an effective servant leader is kindness, honesty, patience, forgiveness and selflessness to your employees. These employees look to you for direction and inspiration. It truely is better to be loved than feared. No one wants to work for someone who doesn’t value them or their position.
